Stages of tissue repair Flashcards

Q

Inflammation

A
  • Heat (local) - Calor
  • Redness - Rubor
  • Swelling - Tumor
  • Pain - Dolar
  • Loss of function - functio laesa
protective mechanism to rid the body of an irritant and promote repair and healing of damaged tissues

Phases of inflammation-

A
  • Acute Inflammatory Phase: Few hours - 3 days
  • Repair Phase: 24 hours - 6 weeks

Q

Acute Inflammatory Phase: Few hours - 3 days

A
  • defend against foreign substance and infection, dispose of dead or dying tissue, immobilize injured area, compartmentalize area of damage
    1. Initial vasoconstriction (30 sec; reflexive) (NEpi, serotonin)
    2. Gradual vasodilation (causes bleeding to start–>histamines, prostaglanines)
    cells: Mast cells, leukocytes

Q

Repair Phase: 24 hours - 6 weeks

A
  1. Deposition of Collagen
  2. Macrophages
  3. Granulation tissue - form gel like matrix of collagen, hyaluronic acid and fibronectin. scar!
  4. Fibroplasia - hours after injury
  5. Wound contraction

Q

Remodeling Phase: 2 weeks to 12 months

A

a.During phase 2 collagen is laid down at random (Type III); remodeling to type I to increase tensile strength
Window of 8-10 weeks where collagen can be remodeled
80% as strong as original non-injured tissue

Q

Soft Tissue Healing Potential -

A
  • Cartilage: limited potential; poor vascular supply
  • Ligaments: slower to heal; 1 year
  • Skeletal mm: heals with a collagen scar at the same rate of other vascular tissues
  • Nerve: peripheral nerves: fair, CNS: poor

Q

Acute Inflammatory Phase: Few hours - 3 days CHEMICALS

A

chemicals:Serotonin - vasoconstrictor
Heparin - temporary blood coagulation
Histamine - first chemical, strong vasodilator, increases permeability
Bradykinins - increase permeability and pain with PG
PG - released from phospholipids; ARA
