lightest sleep lasting a few minutes
gradual fall in vitals and metabolism
sensory stimuli easily arouse sleeper
feel as though daydreaming occurred if awoken
NREM N2
relaxation progresses
arousal is still relatively easy
brain and muscle activity continue to slow
NREM N3
slow-wave sleep
deepest stage of sleep
difficult to arouse and rarely moves
brain and muscle activity are significantly decreased
vital signs are lower than during waking hours
REM sleep
dreaming occurs
usually begins about 90 minutes after sleep has begun
rapid eye movement, fluctuating heart and respiratory rates, increased or fluctuating blood pressure
loss of skeletal muscle tone
gastric secretions occur
very difficult to arouse
duration increases with each cycle and averages 20 minutes
