Stages of respiration Flashcards
Name the stages of respiration in order.
Glycolysis, transition , kreb’s cycle, Electron transport chain.
Explain Glycolysis. (respiration)
Occurs in the cytoplasm of cell. Glucose is broken down into pyruvate. 2 f ATP produced and hydrogen which moves to cristae.
Explain the transition stage (respiration)
pyruvate enters matrix of mitochondria. CO2is removed, producing acetyl co enzyme A and more hydrogen which moves to the cristae.
Explain the krebs cycle (respiration)
Occurs in matrix. Producing CO2 and hydrogen and 2 ATP.
Meanwhile….carrier molecules NADH and FADH2 have picked up hydrogens and transport them to ETC.
Explain the electron transport chain
Occurs on cristae of mitochondria. hydrogens are passed along the ETC, releasing 34 ATP. Oxygen is required at this stage and water is produced.
