1-one word stage
2-two word stage
3-Telegraphic stage
4-Post telegraphic stage
What happens in the one word stage?
-use of hyponyms and hypernyms
-one word eg ‘daddy’ could have a more complex meaning such as ‘daddy I’m hungry’
-use of rising and falling intonation to show needs of child
What happens in the 2 word stage?
-2 word utterances eg me fall
-Brown said all children make the same relationships with grammatical concepts
-EG: negation(when something is denied and a child says ‘no ball’)
-Nomination(if a person/object is Labeled- child says ‘that cake’)
What happens in the telegraphic stage?
-use of 3 or more words in a sentence
-Questions asked but not just with rising intonation- with correct words eg
Who what when where why eg ‘where mummy’
-Negatives more frequently used eg ‘no wear shoes’
-pronouns more frequently used eg me you she
-determiners used ‘the,a’
What happens in the post telegraphic stage?
-child begins using more complex sentence structures
-better use of tenses eg past tense regular(ed)
-morphological development-eg getting end of words right ‘ing’
What is a ‘virtuous error’?
A child’s logical error with grammar
What is ‘overgeneralisation’?
When children use a grammatical rule to something which is wrong eg ‘goed’ instead of ‘went’
