What are the stages of attachment?
- asocial phase
- indiscriminable attachment
- specific attachment
- multiple attachment
What is a social phase?
– birth to 3 months, infants become attracted to other humans at six weeks. They smile more faces than objects
What is the indiscriminate stage?
3 to 7 months, influence begin to recognise familiar faces and will accept comfort from any adult.
What is a specific attachment stage?
78 months, start to develop anxiety about strangers, become distressed away from one specific adult/primary attachment (65% of cases it’s the mother)
What is a multiple attachment stage?
– nine months onwards, infant for multiple attachments with other people who they spent a lot of time with. For example grandparents and other children (these are secondary attachments)..
What does SChaffer and Emerson do?
– 60 baby studied from Glasgow
– baby is visited every month for a year and then once again it’s 18 months
– mothers asked how their child behaves when separated and unfamiliar adults.
– babies start recognising familiar faces at the indiscriminate stage
– Babies developed stranger anxiety at the specific attachment stage.
