*aware of memory loss
*forget familiar words or locations of everyday objects
*no symptoms of dementia can be detected during a
medical exam or by friends, family or co-workers

diagnosed in some, but not all, individuals w/these
symtoms

*forgetting material that you have just read
*losing or misplacing a valuable object
*increasing trouble w/planning or organizing

* Impaired ability to perform challenging mental math
*difficulty performing complex tasks (paying bills, planning
dinner party with guests, managing finances)
*become moody or withdrawn esp. in socially or mentally
challenging situations

alzheimer’s disease

*gaps in memory and thinking are noticeable
*begin to need help with day-to-day activities
AT THIS STAGE THEY MIGHT BE UNABLE TO:
*recall address or phone numbers, high school/college
they attended
*know where they are or what day it is
*do simple math
*pick appropriate clothes for the season
*remember significant details about self and family
*they don’t need assistance w/toileting or eating

*severe cognitive decline (moderately, severe or midstage
alzheimers disease
HALLMARK
AT THIS STAGE INDIVIDUALS MAY:
*Lose awareness of recent experiences & surroundings
* (rememberer own names but difficulty w/personal histories
*distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar faces but have
but can’t remember spouse or caregiver name
*need help dressing (put shoes on wrong feet etc.)
*major sleep pattern changes (sleep all day, cranky night)
*need help w/toileting
*trouble controlling bowels and bladder
*major behavioral changes (suspiciousness, delusions,
compulsive or repetitive behaviors
*tend to wander/get lost

A

*very severe cognitive decline (severe or late-stage
Alzheimer’s disease
HALLMARK
*In final stage of disease: Lose the ability to respond to
their environment, carry on a conversation, to control
movement
*they may still say words or phrases
*need help with much of their daily personal care (eating or
using the toilet.
*lose the ability to smile, sit without support, hold their
heads up
*reflexes are abnormal
*muscles rigid
swallowing impaired
