A
Inspiratory:
Sternocleidomastoid
Pec min/maj
Scalene group
Expiratory:
Rectus abdominis
External oblique
Transverse abdominis

Work of breathing
A
Signs of increased work of breathing: 1. Increased breathing/respiratory rate
2. Accessory muscle use
3. Signs of distress- pursed lip, puffing cheeks

Breathing rate, depth, pattern
A
- Increased breathing rate
- More shallow, less efficient breaths
- Abnormal pattern
- Inspiration:Expiration ratio

Patient position
A
- Raised shoulder gurdle
- Fixed upper limbs
- Sitting, long sitting, supine, side lying
- Domed diaphragm, hunched over

Colour
A
- Pale (hypotensive)
- Clammy or red - Infection (increased CO2 causes vasodilation)
- Blue around lips (deoxygenated blood near surface of skin)
