Why is staff motivation important?
Workers want to feel valued & that they are doing their jobs well. Happy workers are good for the business
What is Remuneration?
Paying staff for the work they do is called remuneration or a financial reward
How can staff be motivated by remuneration?
- Increasing wage or salary can help to motivate staff - means they have more money to spend on the things they enjoy. Bonus or pension payments can also work well
- Training
- Styles of management
What benefits do larger firms have when offering financial rewards?
Larger firms usually have more money to spend on staff remuneration.
EG a growing business is more likely to offer a yearly bonus
As it grows the firm will offer more financial rewards on top of basic pay to its staff
How can training help motivate staff?
- Main point of training is to make staff better at their jobs, staff who are good at their jobs are generally more motivated
- As they learn new skills they can be promoted, extra pay & responsibilities are good for motivation
- Training also helps them meet personal targets as part of their appraisal
What are the different styles of management?
- Authoritarian (autocratic) - Make decisions alone without consulting staff
- Paternalistic - make decisions themselves but only after consultation with workers
- Democratic - Allow workforce some influence over decisions
- Laissez-faire - Allow workers to perform tasks as they see fit, offering help if needed
How can styles of management help to motivate / demotivate staff?
- Authoritarian can make workers feel they are not valued and so demotivate them
- Laissez-faire can leave staff feeling lost & without support but great for motivated, independent workers
What does “Staff Retention” mean?
Keeping hold of good workers
Why is Staff retention important?
- Time & money is spent recruiting & training staff
- Large bus spend lots of time and money on recruiting
- If workers are good at their jobs you want to retain them for as long as possible
What are good ways to retain staff?
Motivation, less likely to leave if they are well motivated
Offer a career path, larger firms are able to offer promotion
