Q

What steps would you take to help create a positive and supportive environment for staff and students?

A

I would give teachers a voice in the decision making process. Giving teachers a voice helps them feel both valued and respected. Teachers should be given the opportunity to take part in various committees. I immediately address negativity (negativity spreads quickly). If there is an unhappy staff member, I’ll immediately talk to that person. I want educators to take risks and grow. A positive environment is one of growth. Without allowing teachers to take risks, they’ll never grow. And by risks I mean, encouraging teachers to try innovative lessons and instructional practices. However, I first need to establish trust with teachers, otherwise they won’t take risks. And lastly, I need to make school safety a top priority. If people don’t feel safe, the environment will inherently be negative. To have a positive atmosphere, safety is key.

Summary: Give teachers a voice in the decision making process, create school/department goals based off of individual goals, address negativity, allow and encourage educators to take risks, make school safety a top priority (all students and teachers must feel safe).

Q

What steps would you take to help create a positive school climate?

A

Before you begin, first assess the current school climate. Everything begins and ends in assessment. Assess for areas of improvement. You should also evaluate staff affinity to a shared school vision. The shared school vision should should be created off of the individuals visions of the staff. Next up, ensure stakeholder engagement. A positive school climate consists of students, staff, parents, community members, all engaged and taking part within the school. Work toward creating a fun workplace atmosphere. You want staff and students to enjoy coming to school. And lastly, establish values of respect for all. That begin with administrators, as they must model what respect looks like for all.

Summary: Assess the current school climate, evaluate affinity to the shared school vision, identify and engage stakeholders, create a fun atmosphere, and establish values of respect
