Active Staff
- Routinely admit and treat patients
- Participate in the work of the medical staff
- May admit or attend minimum number of patients
Associate/ Provisional Staff
- Admit & treat patients
- Used as initial or provisional category
Consulting Staff
- Do not admit patients
- Provide consultation/ support to attending physicians
Honorary or Emeritus Staff
- Physicians who retire from active staff
- Serve as resource to medical staff
Refer & Follow Staff
- Refer patients to a hospitalist or other medical staff for inpatient services
Faculty Staff
- Applicable to teaching facilities
- Staff who participate in medical education program
House Staff
- Interns & residents
- Cannot admit/ treat patients beyond scope of training program
- Mechanism for supervision delineated in bylaws
- Not granted privileges, unless LIP (Ex: Moonlighting Resident)
Hospitalist Staff
- Focused on general medical care of hospitalized patients
- May be department specific (Ex: Internal Med)
Ambulatory Care Providers/ Affiliate Staff
- Only provide care in outpatient setting
- Do not admit patients to hospital
- May apply for privileges to satisfy requirements for managed care plans or surgical center affiliations
TJC on Staff Categories
Privileges mean duties & prerogatives of each category, not providing care to patients
HFAP on Staff Categories
Must have categories for all types of medical practitioners
