Stable Coronary Artery: Clinical Pharmacology Flashcards
What is stable angina?
A clinical syndrome of predictable chest pain precipitated by exercise or emotional stress, which increase myocardial oxygen demand.
Define Atypical Angina
Defined as stable angina but with symptoms not clearly identifiable as ischaemic chest pain.
- Breathlessness
- Burning/reflux/burping
What are the characteristics of Angina?
- Predictable
- Consistent
- Relieved by medication
- Not an emergency
What are the risk factors of angina?
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Hyperlipidaemia
- Family histor
- Post menopausal females
- Male
What are the causes of angina?
Angina arises because of a mismatch between myocardial oxygen supply and the myocardial demand. Increased myocardial blood flow results in reduced demand.
What increases myocardial demand?
Heartload, preload, afterload, Myocardial contractility – systolic function, Myocardial relaxation – diastolic function and Myocardial wall stress.
How do you treat stable coronary artery disease?
- Releive symptoms - Reduce workload of heart and improve coronary blood flow
- Slow/halt the disease process
