A
Excipients can induce degradation of either the active ingredient OR another excipient.
- EX
- Transesterification of methylparaben and sorbitol to form a mixture of esters
- transesterification of aspirin with phenylephrine HCl, acetaminophen, or PEG
- aspirin reacts with PEG in suppositories so wil always be in fatty base
- will make an ester

- lactose and amine drugs undergo maillard rxn forming glycosyl amine -> rearranges to a sugar
