what are chemical incompatibilitesi

A

Excipients can induce degradation of either the active ingredient OR another excipient.

  • EX
    • Transesterification of methylparaben and sorbitol to form a mixture of esters
    • transesterification of aspirin with phenylephrine HCl, acetaminophen, or PEG
      • aspirin reacts with PEG in suppositories so wil always be in fatty base
        • will make an ester
    • lactose and amine drugs undergo maillard rxn forming glycosyl amine -> rearranges to a sugar
