Stability Flashcards
What two areas does stability affect on aircraft?
Manoeuvrability
Controllability
What movement is around the vertical axis?
Yaw
What movement is around the longitudinal axis?
Roll
What movement is around the lateral axis?
Pitch
What are the three planes of stability?
Longitudinal, lateral, directional
What different between the planes of stability and movement?
Lateral swaps with longitudinal
Longitudinal swaps with lateral
Vertical swaps with directional
What are the three kinds of static stability
Positive
Neutral
Negative
What are the three types of dynamic stability?
Positive
Neutral
Negative
Explain positive, neutral and negative static stability
Positive - will return to original position
Neutral - will maintain change in position (5 degrees nose up)
Negative - continue moving past movement (meant to be 5 degrees up but keeps going up)
Explain positive, neutral and negative dynamic stability
Positive - oscillations that dampen over time
Neutral - oscillations that don’t dampen
Negative - oscillations that get bigger over time
What can improve stability in terms of wing shape?
Swept back
What do dihedral angle wings help do?
Recover steady flight if wings go in balanced
What is the side slip angle?
Angle between aircraft centreline and side slip direction
What is Dutch roll?
Lateral directional oscillations
