St Alban Flashcards
Who was St Alban
Alban was a solider in the Roman army. He did not know about Jesus. It was dangerous to be a Christian. Christians were killed because they would not worship the Roman gods. Alban hid a priest in his house. The priest told Alban about Jesus. Then Alban understood and he became a Christian. When the soldiers came to arrest the priest, Alban put on the priest’s clothes. He was taken to the Government. The governor was angry when he found out what Alban had done. Alban would not give up believing in Jesus. He said “I am called Alban and I worship and adore the true and living “ He was put to death. When people saw Alban’s faith many of them became Christian too. The place where Alban was martyred soon became a Shrine. A shrine is a place where people come to pray and remember someone who was holy.
Why was St Alban important to christianity?
Alban was sentenced to endure all the punishments that were to be inflicted upon the priest, unless he would comply with the pagan rites of their religion. Alban refused, and declared, “I worship and adore the true and living God who created all things.” (The words are still used in prayer at St Alban’s Abbey).
