why is it important to know patients health baseline pre-op?

which drug can be especially tricky around surgery?
insulin because of stress but also fasting
why are we concerned about obesity pre-op?
because it increases risk of sleep apnea
some highlights of important patient education for pre-op
- teach about what to expect after- what drains/tubes they will have, how they will feel, timeline of returning to normal
- safety things (no driving for day surgery, no climbing out of bed)
- drugs and NPO, pre-op prep if required (cleaning, shaving, etc)
how to approach an older adult about pre=op anxiety?
don’t rush, give time for them to connect meanings and respond
what is an important consideration for pre-op teaching with kids?
they have developmentally specific irrational fears, such as mutilation, so be careful to not use idioms, etc
