SSEP Flashcards
Where does the SSEP pathway originate?
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Where should the stimulus occur in the upper extremities for SSEP?
Brachial Plexus
Where should the stimulus occur in the lower extremities for SSEP?
Popliteal Fossa
What lateral dorsal columns and parts of the body are stimulated in SSEP?
Faciculus cuneatus, upper body
What medial dorsal columns and parts of the body are stimulated in SSEP?
Faciculus gracilis, lower body
How do fibers decussate the medulla?
Action potential crosses from the synapse in the lower medulla and pass to the contralateral side of the brainstem as internal arcuate fibers.
How do the fibers reach the sensory cortex?
Ascends medial leminiscus, goes to ventral posterolateral nucleus, follows internal capsule, and projects to the postcentral gyrus.
Upper SSEPS projects more laterally compared to Lower SSEPS which project more medially after being projected to the sensory cortex.
TRUE
Which pathway is effected in those who show lhermitte’s sign
Posterior columns, electrical shock down the arms when head is bent forward to chest.
