What is Literature?
A whole bulk of written works. Significant Human Experiences. A body of works that show ‘The Best that has been thought and said.’
What is Poetry?
Refers to expressing a feeling or an idea using figurative or symbolic language.
What are the elements of poetry?
The use of technical terms, idiom, dialect, new words, allusion and connotation to express the feelings of the writer.
What are some examples of idioms?
- Isang kahig, isang tuka - mahirap o naghihirap
- Nagmumurang kamatis - babaeng nag dadalaga
- Hulog ng langit - swerte o biyaya
- Maluwag ang tornilyo – luko-luko
- Balat sibuyas – iyakin
What is Figurative Language?
To express something in a different way aside from its literal meaning.
What is a Simile?
A simile compares two unlike things using ‘like’ or ‘as.’
Example: ‘She was as busy as a bee.’
What is a Metaphor?
A metaphor directly asserts that one thing is another, often without using ‘like’ or ‘as.’
Example: ‘Time is money.’
What is Personification?
Personification gives human qualities to non-human entities.
Example: ‘The wind whispered through the trees.’
What is Hyperbole?
Hyperbole exaggerates for emphasis or effect.
Example: ‘I’ve told you a million times.’
What is Alliteration?
Alliteration is the repetition of the same consonant sound at the beginning of nearby words.
Example: ‘Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.’
What is Onomatopoeia?
Onomatopoeia uses words that imitate or suggest the sound they describe.
Example: ‘The buzzing bees flew around the garden.’
What is Imagery?
Consists of descriptions and details that can trigger the reader’s senses (sight, hearing, smell etc.).
What is Sound in poetry?
The emphasis of certain words or rhymes.
What is Rhythm in poetry?
The position of beats or the sound pattern of the work.
What is an Epic?
Narrative relates adventures of a hero with supernatural powers.
What is a Folk Song?
This refers to a song that is transmitted orally from one generation to another.
What are Proverbs?
These are considered statements that teach ideas on morality and tradition.
What are Riddles?
It can be described as an object in an entirely different manner or in a way that it is not easily understood.
What are Short Poems?
Usually has four lines with 5-12 syllables per line.
What is Prose?
Prose is a form of written or spoken language that follows the natural flow of speech, uses a language’s ordinary grammatical structures, or follows the conventions of formal academic writing.
What is a novel?
A lengthy and complex narrative of events based on the author’s imagination.
What is the Didactic Tradition in novels?
A tradition where novels are written to guide the people in the Roman Catholic faith.
What characterizes the Romantic Tradition in novels?
Novels in this tradition pattern their stories from metrical romances.
What is the focus of the Realist Tradition in novels?
Describing experiences of a person or people as social structures and forces affect them.
What does the Radical Tradition in novels promote?
Change in the social and political system.
How is a short story defined?
A concise secular narrative that can be Romantic, Realistic, or Radical.
What are Komiks?
They involve drawing frames showing a set of characters with their actions read from left to right.
What does ‘Style’ refer to in writing?
Style refers to the choices for words and sentence structures used to convey the message and hold the attention of the reader.
What is meant by ‘Form and Structure’ in an essay?
Form and Structure refer to the sequence of topics and transitions that make up the whole essay.
What is a ‘Plot or Story Line’?
A Plot or Story Line is a sequence of events that build up the whole story.
