Second wave feminism
Term given to the movement in the 1960s for greater equality for women.
Sharecropping
Farming system whereby a white landowner provides land seeds and tools but a black worker provides the labour. Common in the South after the civil war.
Sit-ins
Non-violent protests where protesters sat down until their requests were granted or they were evicted often by force.
Suffrage
The right to vote. In the USA this included voting not only for the president but also senators and congressmen in the federal Congress as well as the state governors and congressmen. Local officials were also elected
Taft-Hartley Act 1947
Prevented unions from running a closed shop, where one union dominated and all workers had to belong to it and regulated the relationship between unions and employers.
Talented tenth
Idea originating with white liberals and then publicised by W.E.D Du Bois in 1903 that African Americans would be led by an elite of well educated men drawn from the highest ability 10 per cent.
Temperance
Belief that alcohol was a major social evil and that a good family life was only possible of alcohol and its misuse was prohibited.
Tribal chief
Head or leader of Native American tribe. They presided over the tribal courts and were therefore important in the running of the tribe or nation as the large tribes were called.
Vietnam war
War between the communist north and noncommunist south Vietnam from the mid 1950s to 1975. The USA supported the south from the 1960s to 1973 and became increasingly involved with over half a million troops deployed.
Wagner Act 1935
The National Labour Relations Act established the legal right of most workers except in agriculture or domestic service to organise and join trade unions.
Welfare capitalism
Policy followed by employers during the boom of the 1920s to reduce industrial unrest. It entailed offering workers improved working conditions and other benefits such as pensions in return for establishment of unions under the control or direction of the employers.
Wheeler-Howard Act or Indian Reorganisation Act 1934
Act intended to recognise and preserve traditional Indian culture.
White collar workers
Those who work in professional technical or clerical work.
Yellow dog contacts
Contracts that workers signed whereby they agreed not to join a union.
