Ottoman Empire
Nomadic group that conquered the Byzantine Empire and ruled from 1453-1918 over lands in southwest Asia, North Africa, and Europe
Mughal Empire
Muslim government in India from 1526-1858. This dynasty ruled much of the subcontinent of India, spreading its faith, art and culture
Tokugawa Shogunate
Japanese clan that Unified all of Japan under its control in 1603
Edo
Capital of the Tokugawa shogunate
Istanbul
Capital of the Ottoman Empire. Formerly was called Constantinople by the Byzantine empire
Millet system
religious community of non-muslims in the ottoman empire. This community could practice its own faith and laws, as long as it paid taxes and maintained loyalty to the Ottoman Empire
Devshirme system
Ottoman practice of drafting young Christian boys from the Balkans region of Europe. These boy were converted to Islam an raised to serve the Ottoman sultan, solders, or government officials.
Janissary
An elite soldier in the Ottoman Empire. Some would serve as the sultans personal bodyguards. Over time the Janissary corps gained privileges and power in the Ottoman government.
Suleiman the Magnificent
Ottoman sultan in the 1500s who expanded the empire to its greatest extent. He established a uniform set of laws for the empire, and had many mosques, hospitals and public works projects built.
Akbar the Great
Mughal ruler who was famous for his religious tolerance as a leader. He ended the jizya, the tax on non-mulims in India. He also employed Hindus in his government
Aurangzeb
Mungual ruler who imposed Shira law on all people under his reign in india. He expanded the Mughal territory to cover most of India, but his intolerant policies led many Hindu princes to not be loyal to Mughal rule.
Tokugawa Leyasu
Japanese shogun who unified all of Japan under his rule. His family would rule Japan for over 250 years.
Samurai
Warrior class in Japan who fallowed a strict code of honor, the code of Bushido
Hostage system
Method of control where the shogun required a Daimyo (landowner) to leave his family at the Shogun’s castle whenever he left to spend time away from the shogun
King Louis XIV
Ruler of France who ruled as an absolute monarch over his people. He justified his right to rule with the Divine Right Theory
