SS Flashcards
What is a solution
A solution is a mixture in which the solute is completely dissolved in the solvent
What is a solute
Substance that dissolves in the solvent. Present in smaller proportion
What is a solvent
Substance that dissolves the solute. Present in larger proportion
What is the concept of dissolving
Dissolving is a process where a solid, liquid, or gas forms a solution with the solvent
What are the properties of a solution
Homogeneous mixture
No separation of solvent and solute when left to stand
No residue left when filtered
What are suspensions
Suspensions are mixtures where the insoluble particles are suspended in a solvent
What the properties of suspensions
Heterogeneous mixture
Insoluble particles settle at the bottom of the container when left to stand
Insoluble particles obtained as residue on filter paper after filtration
What is solubility
Maximum mass of solute that can dissolve in 100g of a solvent at a given temperature
What affects solubility
Nature of solute
Nature of solvent
Temperature of solvent
How does a saturated solution form
A saturated solution is formed when the maximum mass of a solute is dissolved in a fixed volume of a solvent at a given temperature. The solvent cannot dissolve anymore solute
What is a solubility curve
It is a graph that shows the maximum mass of a solute that can dissolve in 100g of a solvent at a given temperature to from a saturated solution. The curve shows how the solubility of one substance changes with temperature
What are the applications of solubility curve
Find best temperature to dissolve solute
Find best temperature to crystalise solute from solvent
What is the rate of dissolving
It the mass of a solute that dissolve s in a fixed volume of a solvent, given a fixed amount of time
What affects the rate of dissolving
Temperature of solvent
Rate of stirring
Size of solute particles
How do you find the solubility of a solute
mass of solute divided by mass of solvent x 100g
