Squamous cell carcinoma
Arises from superficial layers of epidermis
More aggressive than BCC
Appearance:
Irregular
Red plaque
Scaly or warty
Ulceration
Invasion
Infection
Squamous cell carcinoma (II)
Low rate of metastases through spread to lymph nodes more common than BCC
Most common on face
Presents as an irregular keratinous nodule or firm erythematous plaque
Freq ulcerates
Acting keratosis
Rough areas of skin found in people who have been exposed to a lot of sun
Very common in 1/3 men 70+ have at least 1 actinic keratosis
Approx 2% will turn into SCC
Bowmen’s disease (ça in situ)
Early form SCC
Cancerous cells spread along skins surface but usually slow growing may not change for years only occasionally 3-5%
Malignant melanoma
Malignant transformation of melanocytes in stratum basalt of epidermis
Most occur in skin though may originate from other sites
Subtypes- superficial 70cases
Nodular- 20%
Actual lentigous- 5%
Lentigo maligna melanoma- 5%
Superficial spreading
70% of cases
Darker area in pre-existing mile
Irregular edge and colour variation
Nodular
Most aggressive
Grows quickly on normal skin
Blue/black in colour
Dome shaped
Acral lentiginous melanoma
Common with black ethnicity
Palms, soles and under nails
Large and aggressive lesions
Late lesions have rapid vertical growth phase
