A collective bargaining agreement is an agreement reached between players and league owners, how the league will operate (free agency and salary cap), constitutional nd bylaws
Prorated Bonus?
amount of a bonus a player is payed each season
Cap hit is based on?
yearly salary
What is a salary cap?
the limit the amount of money that a team can spend on player’s salaries
What is the point of a salary cap?
keep costs down and keep the league competitive
What is free agency?
when a contract expires and the player meets qualifications they can choose who they want to play for.
Do performance bonuses count towards the cap?

an unrestricted free agent?
The players contract has expired and allows to sign with any other team
Restricted free agent
player’s contract expires but the team still owns rights to them
Luxury Tax?
charge put on the pay roll if teams exceeds its guideline level

Salary Arbitration
Restricted free agents are allowed to use a 3rd party to settle salary disputes
Escrow (NHL)?
money is taken by the NHL each year off of players’ paychecks then given back at the end of the year when the NHL knows their total revenue

Player transaction agreement
A player under contract to a team is placed on “waivers” for a specified period of time; during this time other teams may submit a claim for that player’s contract.
