sports medicine cq3; taping and bandaging Flashcards
What is taping?
The application of adhesive or non-adhesive strapping of bandages to a joint area, to support or strengthen the joint during movement.
Which sports are most effective for taping?
Sports that require, agility, power, speed and strength as they can place considerable stress on joints.
e.g. basketball, football
These sports demand explosive movements and frequent changes of direction so joints periodically sustain high levels of stress.
What are the two types of tape?
- Kinesthetic/Kinesiology tape (Modern Taping)
- Prophylactic tape (Rigid Tape)
What is prophylactic tape?
Tape used for the prevention of injuries, namely for ankles and wrists to prevent sprains and for support after sprains.
The main purpose of this rigid tape is to limit joint mobility.
How long should Kinesthetic/Kinesiology tape be used on the skin for?
The tape’s medical grade adhesive is also water-resistant and strong enough to stay on for 24 hours a day for 3-5 days, even during workouts or showers.
How long should prophylactic tape be used on the skin for?
Short periods of time and removed after practice/game.
What is the main aim of taping?
- Decrease range of motion possible in a joint
- Prevent certain movements whilst not impeding on others
- To increase the proprioceptive awareness of the joint
How can tape be used to prevent injury? (feedback)
Tape provides feedback to the athlete by pulling on the skin when the tape is stretched, providing a sensation that stimulates the muscles around the joint and reduce movement in order to prevent injury.
How can tape be used to prevent injury? (placebo)
Tape also works as a placebo allowing the athlete to be confident in their movements, helping skilled athletes become more biomechanically efficient. Hence, making them less likely to suffer injury.
What is the technique of kinesiology/kinesthetic taping?
The technique of Kinesio taping uses highly elastic therapeutic tape made of a blend of cotton and nylon, to provide functional correction and circulatory/lymphatic correction.
What are the benefits of K-tape?
- Increased blood flow
- Increased lymphatic drainage
- Decreased healing time
- Support to joints and surrounding soft tissue
How can taping be used for isolation of injury?
Taping for isolation of injury is about reducing the pain during exercise and preventing further injury as the athlete is rehabilitated and begins return to play.
What are the goals in taping for isolation of injury?
- Limit range of motion
- Provide proprioceptive feedback to stimulate muscles for stability
- Increase stability of the joint
- Shift anatomic parts into the correct positions
- Compress soft tissue to reduce inflammation
Why is support, stability and limited range of motion required for isolation of an injury in rehabilitation?
Support, stability and limited range of motion is required so that the injured area becomes accustomed to the demands of the full activity.
Allowing for the athlete to participate in body conditioning to maintain fitness during recuperation.
What are the uses of taping and bandaging? (syllabus)
- Preventative taping
- Taping for isolation of injury
- Bandaging for immediate treatment of injury
