How has the pre-participation exam changed over the last few decades?
years ago it only used to be a quick check up and only last about 5 min. Now, It has changed to be a well thought out exam, they have added questions, do a thorough check up, comprehensive assessment, check overall health and ability to perform to the best of their ability.
List 5 goals of the PPE
- General health of the athlete
- Disclosure of defects that may limit participation
- Detection of conditions that may predispose the athletes to injury
- Determination of optimal level of performance
- Evaluation of fitness and performance
What are some benefits of station based and office bases PPE?
Station Based: low coast, able to see multiple athletes at a time, able to see multiple sports med specialists
Office Bases: Quiet, privacy, doctor already knows backround
What are some of the challenges of a station based PPE?
Finding a place to meet, and finding volunteer sports specialists.
What are the 5 components of the PPE?
Height, Weight, Pulse, blood pressure, and body (eyes, ears, nose, mouth ect.)
What is the overall goal of the PPE?
To maintain health and safety of their athletes.
Why is determining clearance for participation sometimes a difficult decision for physicians?
Because sometimes it is hard to know how well the body will hold up or how it will respond to treatment. They also WANT the athlete to play their sport but its hard to know how serious the injury is or not.
Why is it important to keep information gathered in the PPE confidential?
because that is personal information about the Athletes medical history and personal information.
What should one do to accomplish beginning to develop a doctor-patient relationship with her athletes?
