Sports Med Flashcards
Environmental Considerations- Temp Regulation
Convection (air/fluid currents)
Conduction (touch/contact)
Radiation (UV rays, infra-red)
Evaporation (sweat)
Environmental Considerations- climatic conditions
Temp Humidity Wind Rain Altitude Pollution
Temperature Regulation meaning?
Maintaining internal body temperature, homeostasis (37). Controlled by hypothalamus.
Physical Preparation - Pre-Screening
Assesses health status of individual before they begin training program.
Identifies health risks e.g. heart condition.
In consultation with health professionals, can devise exercise prescription specific to individual.
Motivates people.
Understanding limitations & exercising with guidance enhances safety & wellbeing
E.g. heart condition, recommend low intensity, aerobic.
Physical Preparation - Warm Ups, Stretching, Cool Down
WARM UP
- Should prepare body for physical activity and is important for safe participation.
- Should begin with whole body movements at low intensity and slowly increase. Include games & stretches specific to sport e.g. dynamic stretching (active movements of muscle that bring forth stretch but don’t hold in position) for netball and jogging to reduce injury
- Helps body slowly adapt to demands of game.
STRETCHING
- increases flexibility, reducing injury
- PNF: static stretch followed by isometric contraction
- Ballistic: bouncing motion to push body beyond range of motion, increase elasticity.
COOL DOWN
- Prevent DOMs
- allows body temp, heart rate, respiration go back to normal.
- involves callisthenics, stretching and light intensity activity e.g. jogging.
Physical Preparation - Skill & Technique
Technique reduces injury and makes movement more energy efficient.
Skilled players have high level of temporal patterning, pacing, control.
Need to master correct skill and technique to prevent injury e.g. high jump- jump
Practise skills related to game e.g. twisting body before over pole.
Physical Preparation - Physical Fitness
- Makes you match-ready and able to cope with demands.
- Lack of fitness for particular sport leads to injuries. e.g. gymnast needs level of flexibility otherwise could pull muscle.
