Sports injuries Flashcards
definition of rehabilitation
a programme which is devised to enable the athlete to return to sport with full function in the shortest possible time
definition of exercise induced muscle damage (DOMS)
pain experienced after intense exercise due to microscopic tears in the muscle fibres that cause swelling and pain
it peaks at 24-72 hours post event
definition eccentric exercise
exercise that involves eccentric contraction of the muscle where it lengthens under tension.
for example - running downhill, plyometric workout
definition static stretching
taking a joint just beyond its point of resistance and holding the position for up to 30 seconds
definition of dynamic stretching
using a controlled movement, bounce or swinging motion to take a joint to the limit rate of motion
definition of PNF stretching
the most effective form of stretching involves taking the joint just beyond its point of resistance and performing an isometric contraction for 10 seconds. then relax the muscle and repeat 3 times
definition of massage
a manual therapy used in the assessment of soft tissue injury and pain. also now as soft tissue therapy
definition of lymphatic drainage
the carrying of waste products away from tissue towards the heart
definition of analgesia
relief from pain
definition of vasodilation
a decrease in sympathetic stimulation causes a widening of the blood vessel
definition of cryotherapy
the use of extreme cold to treat a variety of soft tissue damage
deffinition of “game ready” systems
a system that combines circulating cold water around an injured joint or limb. while also applying intermittent compression
definition of NSAIDS
the medication widely used in the treatment in sports injuries that have analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties
definition of antipyretic
used to prevent or reduce fever
