Sport Psychology Flashcards
What is Sport Psychology?
The study of mental factors that relate to athletes
What is the inverted U theory
an athlete needs to gave an optimal level of arousal to perform successfully
What is intrinsic motivation?
comes from within and occurs when factors such as enjoyment, satisfaction, improvement and enhanced feelings of self worth are the motivations for performance.
what is extrinsic motivation?
has an external focus and usually involves some form of material benefit such as financial rewards, awards and trophies, glory and recognition
What are methods to motivate athletes
punishment, getting to the next goal, feedback, pep talks,
what is under arousal
the athlete may be feeling tired, distracted or disinterested and miss a critical movement by opponent
what is over arousal
the athlete may become stressed, anxious or overwhelmed and unable to focus on surrounding movements
what are the three preparation techniques for physical performance
physical- the extent to when the body is ready to compete
emotional- emotional readiness to compete
mental- clarity of mind
what is mental imagery/ rehearsal
when athletes visualise themselves flawlessly performing a skill or competition event e.g
as visualising yourself jumping far in long jump or throwing a free throw goal in basketball
what is confidence
confidence is gained from practice or perfecting a skill, the more confident you are the better you perform
definition of concentration
to effectively exert mental effort on the specific task at hand while ignoring distractions
different types of attention
sustained attention- distance running, marathons
short bursts of attention- cricket, golf
intense attention- sprinting, skiing
strategies to improve attention/concentration
- centred breathing
- mental rehearsal
- positive self talk
What is goal setting
what ever you are trying to achieve
- with goals you focus your attention on where your going and what you are working towards each day
