Skill
A learned cation with the intention of bringing about a pre-determined result.
Ability
An inherited stable trait that determines an individuals potential to acquire more skills.
Basic skill
Requires few decisions and little concentration, can be learnt fairly quickly as a beginner.
Example of a basic skill
Walking, jogging, throwing/catching
Complex skill
Requires much decision making, can be taught after mastery of basic skills. Takes considerable time to master correctly.

Open skill
A skill performed to deal with a changing/ unstable environment.

Closed skill
A skill unaffected by external factors

Self paced skill
The skill is started when a performer decides. Speed, rate and pace are controlled throughout.

Externally paced skill
The skill is started due to external factors and is controlled by these throughout.

Football passing
Gross skill
Skill that uses large muscle groups to perform big, strong, powerful movements.
