Why do some say that class is less relevant now due to changes in recent decades?
. The demise of traditional manual labour

. The decline of communities constructed around industries
. the rise of new social movements and interest groups that cut across traditional class boundaries
How is social class still evident in elite and non elite sport and society generally?
. Beijing Games 40% of medal winners and 50% of gold medal winners were privately educated (7% of total population)
. upper social graded people are statistically more active
. upper class more likely to attend the top universities
Does class still matter when looking at education?
. intended not to matter with allocated free hours
. but more money=more time
. family background also plays a role
. middle class e.g space to work, can already read etc
. staff may give more time to ‘school ready students’
. What benefits can a child from a middle class background have in physical activity?
. Heavy investment in physical activity enrichment opportunities
. The average (middle class) family spends over £1000 per year on additional activities
. Access to classes, coaching, facilities both inside and outside of school
What is capital?
Capital- the resources we have available, can be economic, cultural, social or physical.
what influences what people do in a social field?
Influenced by what is expected within these fields, the individuals position within this and the resources or capital they have available to them.
How can you raise your status in your social field?
By investing in and consolidating capital.
The sport you play or do not play depends on..
. The exchange value of that capital in that field
. Is sport and PA valued, moreover what sport and PA are valued?
. Maybe you just ‘don’t want to’ ?
How can habitus affect your participation?
. habitus is how comfortable you feel in that social field
. some may not feel comfortable in certain sports eg skiing
