Define ‘Social Media’
The term ‘social media’ can be defined as “a way to interact with others through internet-based applications”. People can create, share and exchange ideas, thoughts and information through virtual communities and networks.

Copyright issues definition with social media
Copyright and social media can often be difficult as, like many things on the internet, it can be difficult to trace who owns the content. Copyright is when an individual copies another user’s work to use for themselves. Copyright is protecting the intellectual property of the creator or owner of that content.
Security issues associated with social media
- Hacking
- Malware sharing
- Social networking worms
- Botnets

- Any activities which aim to compromise digital devices including computers, smartphones, tablets and networks
- Common tactics include viruses, botnets, worms, Trojans, etc.
Malware sharing
- Any piece of software, often written by hackers, to damage devices and steal data
- Occurs through emails, the internet, instant messaging, file sharing systems, etc.
- Trojans, viruses, spyware and ransomware are all types of malware
Social networking worms
- A program that copies itself and spreads to other devices connected to the same
network - Koobface has penetrated Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
Botnets
- Network of infected computers that are made to work together under the control of cyber attackers and criminals
- Can be infected by opening emails with malware, visiting websites that are infected and through peer-to-peer transmission
Shortened links
- People often use URL shortening services to shorten longer URLs to post on social media
- Obscures link destination
Data leaks
- Many users share too much information about the organisation (projects, products, financials, scandals, or other sensitive information
Impersonation
- Where a business or individual’s account is replicated often without their knowledge
Benefits of various social media applications
The use of social media can provide a business with greater opportunities to get
their brand recognised by billions of
people around the world.
Simply put the more people that are aware of your brand the more products
and services you sell and the more successful your business becomes.
