Spongy Bone Versus Compact Bone Flashcards
Spongy bone or cancellous
-filled with red marrow
-network of thin bone plates called trabeculae
-plates close together and have capillaries that allow exchange of nutrients
Compact Bone
-very hard
-outer layer of bones-> diaphysis (long part of bones)
-made of osteons (cylinders)
Osteon
-central open Haversian canal, surrounded by rings of calcified lamellae
-tiny pockets of lamellae for the osteocytes
-blood and lymph runs through Haversian canals and then connect with main blood supply for bone
Compact Bone structure
-Outer membrane: periosteum
-Inner membrane: endosteum
-The end of long bones: epiphyses covered w/ articular hyaline cartilage to prevent bones grinding together
-epiphyseal line: growth plate
