What is spondylolysis
A
- defect in the pars interarticularis of the vertebral arch
- stress fracture pars interarticularis
- fracture normally occurs on the side opposite to the one performing the activity
- can be bilateral or unilateral
- males affected 2-3 more times than females

what are the causes of spondylolysis
A
- participating in sport
- competitive sport

what are the contributing factors
A
- poor sporting technique
- innapropriate training volumes/ sporting surfaces
- poor posture
- lumbar stiffness
- lack of trunk stability/strength
- muscle weakness/tightness
- poor foot biomechanics

what are the symptoms of spondylolysis
A
PAIN
- unilateral/bilteral
- sharp to chronic dull ache
- may radiate to buttock
- aggravated by lumbar extension/rotation

what are the signs of spondylolysis
A
- pain reproduced on extension +/- rotation while standing on affected leg
- increased lumbar lordosis
- tenderness on palpation of fracture site

what investigation would take place
A
- X-ray
- bone scan

what treatment would take place
A
- identification and modification of risk factors
- rest from aggravating activity
- quads stretching
- abs stretching
- soft tissue massage
- posture education
- technique adjustments
