osgood shlatter lesion Flashcards
1
Q
what is osgood shlatter lesion
A
traction apophysitis at tibial tuberosity
2
Q
what causes osgood shlatters
A
excessive or repeated contraction of the quads may cause softening and partial avulsion of the developing ossification centre
3
Q
what is apophysitis
A
- type of growth plate
- specialized cartilage
- biomechnially weak point of insertion of tendon-bone
- subject to stress or actue avulsion injury
- irritation, inflammation + microtrauma due to an overuse injury to the apophysis
- skeletally immature
4
Q
what are the symptoms of osgood schlatters
A
- pain at the tibial tuberosity
- insidious onset
- swelling
- pain on kneeling
- pain worse during and after exercise
- running or jumping
5
Q
what are the signs of osgood schlatters
A
pain/tenderness at tibial tuberosity
- pain with resisted knee extension or when contracting the muscle while leg is straight
- quad and hamstring tightness
- excessive subtalar pronation
6
Q
what treatment would be given?
A
- ICE
- stretching
- STM
- taping
- LL muscle strengthening as pain allows
- correction of subtalar pronation
- decrease activity
- activity modification
7
Q
who is likely to have osgood schlatters
A
girls 8-12
boys 12-15
8
Q
what causes osgood schlatters
A
repeated overuse before the area has finished growing
associated with high levels of activity especially in sports involving running and jumping
