What are negative face threatening acts?
When an individual doesn’t avoid or intend to avoid the obstruction of their interlocutor’s freedom of action. Threat to freedom.
What are paralinguistics?
Referring to non verbal elements of communication including body language, rhythm and tone of voice

What is the function of phatic speech?
It is primarily SOCIAL. No informational value at all. Doesn’t convey opinion or fact and it used when it would be rude not to speak.
Eg, passing someone and saying “Hi you alright” without waiting for an answer - Phatic speech
Why is transactional speech used?
This is intended to ACHIEVE A PURPOSE usually to get something done
Eg. Pass me the salt. Hand me that remote.
What is expressive speech?
This reveals a STATE OF MIND. If you express an opinion about a film or how attractive you find someone, that is an expressive utterance.
Eg. He is good looking. That film was incredible.
If an FTA challenges your self image, which type is it?
