filler
a non verbal sound that adds like a pause either to signal uncertainty or simply as a breathing space for the speaker (erm, um,uh)
false start
when a speaker begins to speak then stops and then starts again (well I was…well I was going to say)
repair
when a speaker corrects some aspect of what they have said - the error might be a grammatical one or the use of the wrong word (I really want England to win..I mean lose)
skip connector
a word or phrase that returns the conversation to a previous topic (anyways as I was saying)
ellipsis
the omission of words for economical reasons and/or because the context means that the person listening understands the shortened utterance
speaker support
words or phrases that show attention or agreement and encourage a speaker to cary on talking (mhm, yeah, okay )
paralinguistics
the aspects of spoken communication that does not involve words (body language and facial expressions )
the 3 conversational genres
1) transactional - used to obtain goods and services
2) interpersonal - used for socialising
3) phatic - small talk, used for emotive purposes and not for sharing information
adjacency pair
a question that is followed by an answer
preferred response
a response your hoping to hear
dis-preferred response
an unexpected response you weren’t hoping to hear
insertion sequence
sequence of turns that intervenes between the first and second parts of the adjacency pair
exchange structure
sequence of communication that can be used to analyse the types of conversation
