Q

Explain white and red pulp

A

White pulp= forms island or nodules in the lobulesAnd containing large numbers of lymphocytes. These are responsible for white colour
Red pulp= consisting of sinuses containing large amounts blood (red colour)

Q

Name function of spleen

A
  1. Produces red blood cells in foetal life = may regain function post-natally then called extramedullary or ectopic erythropoiesis
  2. Blood reservoir - not important in man
  3. Fitter for blood. Macrophages remove damaged and abnormal red blood cells, foreign particles and parasites e.g malaria
  4. producer und stores lymphocytes especially t= cells

Q

What functions are also associated with spleen

A

The release of platelets
When hyperactive = destroy red blood cells, neutrophils and blood platelets= hyperslenism
Results in anaemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia

Q

What hormones is produced by spleen

A

Trrombopoertin= a protein like substance isolated from the spleen 15 d hormone which stimulates megakaryocyte proliferation and thus thrombocyte production

Q

Explain how spleen removes old cells

A

Blood cells passing through the splenic pulp better entering the sinuses undergo thorough squeezing which=
Fragile red blood cells are destroyed
After the e cells rupture, the released hemoglobin and the cell stroma are digested by the reticuloendothelial cells of the spleen
Products of digestion are mainly reused by the body as nutrients often for making new blood cells

Q

Reticuloendothelial cells of the spleen

A
  • The pulp of the spleen contains many large phagocytic reticuluendothelial cells
  • venous the blood is invaded by infectious agents, the e reticule endothelia/ cells of the spleen rapidly remove debris bacteria, parasites
