Spirometry Flashcards
Define Vital Capacity
When a person takes in as deep a breath as possible and exhaled as much air as can possible be squeezed out.
Definite Spirometry
Measures the amount of air exhaled and how long it takes to exhale.
What does VC stands for?
Vital Capacity
What does FVC stands for?
Forced Vital Capacity
Define Forced Vital Capacity (FVC)?
When the patient exhales forcefully, as hard and fast as they can.
What does FEV1 stands for?
Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second (FEV1)
Define Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second “aka” FEV1?
The amount of air exhaled in one second (if maximum effort)
What does MMEF stand for?
Mid-Maximal Expiratory Flow Rate
Define Mid-Maximal Expiratory Flow Rate (MMEF)?
The rate of flow during expiration between the first 1/4 and last 1/4 of air exhaled.
FVC values are compared to PREDICTED values based on:
- R ace
- A ge
- S ex
- H eight
FVC results are within normal limits if they are within what percentage of the predicted values?
20% of the PREDICTED values compared to previous tests.
Explain the procedure for Spirometry Testing to the patient.
-Sitting or Standing
-Inhale deep breath
-Place mouthpiece in mouth with proper seal.
-behind teeth
-Don’t plus mouthpiece with teeth
or tongue.
-Blow hard and fast as possible
-Sustain Exhalation until told to stop
*at least 6 seconds
*observe the patient
-is air escaping from nose?
-is the patient look like they are
working hard?
-Did they take a deep breath before
forcibly exhaling?
-Tell patient to exhale before removing
removing mouth piece from mouth.
Each effort must be within what percentage?
5%
Must have at least ____ good efforts.
3
For the Post Bronchodilator test (BD)
- A good baseline is required
- Physician must approve the baseline test before administering the BD
- Post BD test are done 15-20 mins after the treatment is finished.
