Spirometers Flashcards
What is a spirometer?
A machine used to investigate breathing
Spirometers measure various aspects of respiration.
What does tidal volume (TV) measure?
The volume of air in each breath, usually about 0.4 dm³
Tidal volume is a key measurement in assessing lung function.
What is vital capacity?
The maximum volume of air that can be breathed in or out
Vital capacity is an important measure in respiratory health.
How is breathing rate defined?
The number of breaths taken per unit time, usually per minute
Breathing rate is crucial for monitoring respiratory function.
What does oxygen uptake refer to?
The rate at which a person uses up oxygen
Oxygen uptake is vital for assessing metabolic and respiratory efficiency.
What does soda like in the tube of spirometer do
It absorbs carbon dioxide
Why does the overall volume of gas in the tank of a spirometer decline over time
When breathing through a spirometer, we are using up the oxygen in the tank, while the carbon dioxide we breathe out is absorbed by the soda lime. As a result the gas volume of the tank decreases
