MAGNIFICATION AND RESOLUTION Flashcards
What is magnification
Magnification is the number of times larger an object appears compared to the size of the specimen or sample
Magnification formula
Magnification = Image size / Actual size
M= I / A
What is Resolution
Resolution is the clearity of the image. It is how ability of the microscope to distinguish between two points that are close together
What are the types of microscope
•Light microscope
•Electron Microscope -Transmission electron
microscope
-Scanning electron microscope
•Laser scanning (confocal) microscope
Explain what you know about light microscope
- Uses light to produce image
- lower resolution than electron microscope
-Used to look at whole cells or tissues
-Used to view both living and non-living cells
-Resolution = 200 nm
-Magnification = x1500
Is the resolution of light microscope determined by wavelength of light
Yes
What do you know about electron microscope
-Uses electrons to produce image
-Higher resolution than light microscope
-two types of electron microscope
-resolution is determined by wavelength of electrons
How does transmission electron microscope work
Transmission electron microscope uses electromagnets to focus of beam of electrons, which is then transmitted through the image to form a 2D image
What can Transmission electron microscope be used to look at
Very small organelle like ribosomes (due to high resolution)
Used to look at internal structure of organelles in detail
