spirometer trace Flashcards
what does TV stand for
tidal volume
what does IRV stand for ?
inspiratory reserve volume
what does ERV stand for
expiratory reserve volume
what does RV stand for
residual volume
what does VC stand for
vital capacity
what does TLC stand for
total lung capacity
what is tidal volume
Normal amount of air inhaled or exhaled per breath. Increased with exercise.
what is Expiratory reserve volume
Amount of air that can be expired from the lungs after normal expiration. Decreases with exercise.
what is Inspiratory reserve volume
Amount of air that can be inspired from the lungs after normal expiration. Decreases with exercise.
what is Vital capacity
Amount of air maximally exhaled after maximum inspiration. No change during exercise.
what is Residual volume
Amount of air that remains in the lungs after maximal expiration. No change during exercise.
what type of pressure does mechanical ventilation use?
positive pressure to force air into the lungs
what kind of pressure is breathing normally
negative pressure
what is the difference between breathing normally and via a ventilator ?
- positive air is forced into the lungs in order to to increase the thoracic cavity (ventilator)
- negative (normal breathing) the space in the theoretic cavity increases letting in the air
why is it important to absorb CO2 in a spirometer trace?
because it will increase the breathing if it is not being absorbed (the body trying to get rid of co2) and CO2 is toxic
