Spine And Back Problems Flashcards
What is the structure of the spine?
24 vertebrae: 7 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar
Sacrum 5 vertebrae fused together
What are the 2 major components of the intervertebral discs?
Annulus fibrosus- outer layer
Nucleus - center
What is the motion of the disc?
Moves in opposite direction of movement
What is a degenerative disc disease? And what causes it?
Iv discs are no longer plump and cushy
Due to annulus fibrosus is damaged, nucleus pulposus retains less water
What is a bulging discs?
Discs starts to press ob the nerve root/ compression of the nerve foot
What is herniated discs?
Nucleus pulposus pushes out of annulus fibrosus
Due to age related degeneration or sudden compression
What is spinal stenosis?
Narrowing of spinal canal die to congenital stenosis, spinal degeneration, spinal instability, disc herniation
What are the mechanisms of back injury?
Laziness
Repetitive bending
Tight muscles
What are ways to reduce risk of injury?
Proper lifting techniques
Minimize bending
