Spine - Anatomy and Injuries Flashcards
What are the different regions of the spine and how many vertebrae are in each?
- Cervical (7)
- Thoracic (12)
- Lumbar (5)
- Sacral (5 fused)
- Coccyx (4 fused)

What ligaments are found in the spine?
- Anterior longitudinal ligament
- Posterior longitudinal ligament
- Ligamentum flavum
- Supraspinous ligament
- Interspinous ligament

What are some of the differences in different kinds of vertebrae (cervical/thoracic/lumbar)
- Cervical
- Thin lamina
- Transverse foramen
- No transverse processes
- Bifid spinous process
- Foramen for vertebral artery
- Thoracic
- Oblique transverse process
- Facets more aligned in the coronal plane to allow lateral rotation
- Lumbar
- Horizontal transverse processes
- Narrow spinal cord
- Facets more aligned in sagittal plane to allow flexion/extension

How do you know if a vertebrae is thoracic?
You know vertebra is thoracic if rib is attached:
- Rib emerges from disc space, also articulating with tip of transverse process
- Rib comes of above vertebra
How are ribs numbered relative to vertebrae?
Ribs number by the vertebrae below them
Where do ribs articulate?
- Rib emerges from disc space, also articulating with tip of transverse process
Describe the curvature of different regions of the spine?
Cervical - lordosis
Thoracic - kyphosis
Lumbar - lordosis
