Spine Flashcards
What are the typical bony points of a vertebrae
Transverse process
Vertebral body
Posterior tubercle
Anterior tubercle
Transverse foremen
Pedicle
Vertebral foremen
Spinous process
Lamina
Superior articular process
What is the difference between cervical, thoracic and lumbar
Cervical is made up of 7 vertebrae, thoracic has 12 vertebrae and lumbar has 5. The vertebrae in the lumbar region are the biggest and cervical are smallest
Describe the structure and function of intervertebral disc
Helps with shock absorption, flexibility and fluid and nutrition. Also separates the vertebrae enough to allow spinal nerves to exit the intervertebral foramina
Function of the Atlas and axis complex
Helps support the head while also providing mobility for flexion, extension, rotation and lateral rotation
What are the Major spine ligaments
Anterior/posterior longitudinal ligaments, ligamentum flavum, supraspinous ligament, interspinous ligament, intertransverse ligament, ligamentum nuchae, facet capsulary ligament
Muscles that flex
Rectus abdominus
External oblique
Internal oblique
Psoas major
Extension muscles
Erector spinae muscles
Multifidi
Quadratus Lumborum
Rotatores
Lateral flexion
Erector spinae, multifidi, quadratus lumborum, external oblique, internal oblique
Rotation muscles
Multifidi, external oblique, internal oblique, rotatores
What type of joint are the vertebral body
Cartilaginous joints
Origin and insertion of the anterior longitudinal ligament
Occiput to sacrum
Origin and insertion of ligamentum Flavum
Connect ventral parts of laminae of adjacent vertebrae
Origin and insertion of supraspinous ligament
Originates from C7 to L3
Origin and insertion of interspinous ligament
Attatches to base to apex of each spinous process
Origin and insertion of intertransverse ligament
From Occiput and extends entire length of the spine
