Spinal muscles Flashcards
What is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic muscles?
Intrinsic- movement and support of vertebral column
Extrinsic- movement of limbs
Name the extrinsic muscles
Trapezius, Latissimus Dorsi, Rhomboids, Levator Scapulae,
Where is the trapezius muscle attached?
Thoracic vertebrae, cervical region, occipital bone to clavicle and scapula
What are the actions of the trapezius muscle?
Sup/Inf Fibres: Superior Rotation of scapula
Middle Fibres: Retract Scapula
Superior Fibres: Elevate
Inferior Fibres: Depress
Where is the Latissimus Dorsi attached?
Lower Thoracic vertebrae, thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, inferior ribs to humerus
What is the action of the Latissimus Dorsi?
Extend, adduct, and medially rotate shoulder
Where are the Rhomboids attached?
Spinous processes to medial border of scapula
What are the actions of the rhomboids?
Retraction, inferior rotation of scapula
Where is the levator scapulae attached?
C1-4, to medial superior scapula
What is the action of the levator scapulae?
Elevation and inferior rotation of scapula
What are the functions of the intrinsic spinal muscles?
Postural support, movement of trunk
Superficial and deep
Name the intrinsic muscles of the back
Erector Spinae, Transversospinals
What are the purpose of these muscles/ layers of the muscles?
Extensors of the VC
What are the different layers of transversospinal muscles?
Extensor of VC Semispinalis (4-6) Multifidus (2-4) Rotatores (1-2) segments Transverse process to superior spinous process
What are the names of the muscles which make up the erector spinae group of muscles?
I Like Standing (superficial to deep)
Iliocostalis/ Longissimus/ Spinalis
