Spinal Ligaments Flashcards
What is the function of the anterior longitudinal ligament?
It stabilises the spine in extension, stops the vertebrae slipping forward
How many longitudinal ligaments are there? Name them
There are three: Anterior longitudinal ligament, posterior longitudinal ligament, supra spinus ligament
What is the function of the posterior longitudinal ligament?
It stabilises the spine when flexing, stops the vertebrae slipping back
What is the function of the supraspinous ligament?
It acts as brakes to flexion
Where does the anterior longitudinal ligament attach?
At the front of the vertebral bodies
Where does the posterior longitudinal ligament attach?
To the back of the vertebral bodies
Where does the supraspinous ligament attach?
It runs along and attaches to the tips of the spinus processes
How many ligaments are there that join adjacent vertebrae and what are they called?
There are three: intertransverse ligaments, interspinus ligaments, ligamentum flavum
What do the ligamentum flavum do?
They connect the laminae of adjacent vertebrae
What do the intertransverse ligaments do?
They connect the transverse processes together
What do the interspinous ligaments do?
They connect the spinous processes together
