Planes Of Movement Flashcards
What is the Sagittal plane?
Any plane parallel to the median plane
What is the median plane?
It divides the body into symmetrical right and left halves
What is flexion?
A movement in the Sagittal plane takes a part of the body forward from anatomical position. A forward bending movement, brings two bones closer together
What is extension?
A movement in the Sagittal plane which takes a part of the body backward from anatomical position, backward bending, moves two bones further apart
What is hyper extension?
Beyond extension180 degrees, beyond normal range
What is dorsiflexion?
Flexion of the ankle
What is plantaflexion?
Extension of the ankle
What is the transverse plane?
It divides the body into upper and lower parts
What is lateral rotation?
A movement in the transverse plane which takes a part of the body outward
What is medial rotation?
A movement in the transverse plane that takes a part of the body inward
What is supination?
When the part of the body faces upwards or forwards e.g. In supination of the forearm the palm faces upward or forward
What is pronation?
When a part of the body faces downwards or backwards, e.g. In pronation of the forearm the palm of the hand faces downward or backward
What is the coronal or frontal plane?
Any plane perpendicular to the median plane. It divides the body into anterior and posterior parts
What is adduction?
A movement in the coronal plane which takes a part of the body towards the median plane
What is abduction?
A movement in the coronal plane that takes a part of the body away from the median plane
What is lateral Flexion?
A movement in the coronal plane that takes the trunk or neck away from the median plane - side bending
What is inversion?
Supination of the foot
What is eversion?
Pronation of the foot
What does unilateral mean?
On one side of the body only
What does bilateral mean?
On both sides of the body, symmetrically
What does ipsilateral mean?
On the same side of the body
What does contralateral mean?
On the opposite side of the body
What is circumduction?
Making a circular movement
