Spinal Cord Injuries Flashcards
What is Neurogenic Shock? Characterizations? (2) ( Occurs in T6 or higher)
the loss of opposition to Parasympathetic system caused by injury. It is characterized by hypotension and bradycardia.
What is Complete cord involvement?
results in total loss of sensory and motor function below
the level of the injury
What is Incomplete cord involvement?
results in a mixed loss of voluntary motor activity and sensation and leaves some tracts intact.
Which mechanism of injury causes severe neurological deficits?
Flexion-rotation because ligaments that stabilize the spine are torn.
What injury leads to dysfunction of sympathetic nervous system?
T6 and above
What are the nursing interventions in ED? (8)
1) . Patent airway and adequate respiration
2) . Administer 02 keep 02 higher than 92%
3) . Maintain SBP above 90
4) .IV access infuse NS or LR
5) . Immobilize and stabilize cervical spine
6) . Assess for other injuries
7) .Control external bleeding
8) . Obtain appropriate imaging
What is the Nursing interventions for Autonomic Dysreflexia?
1) First check BP if patient complains of headache.
2) Elevate HOB 45 degrees or sitting upright position
3) Determine the cause (catherization, removal of bowel impaction, removal of tight clothing, etc)
4) Notify HCP if interventions do not work
What are manifestations of Autonomic Dsyrelfexia?
HTN, Throbbing headache, Bradycardia, piloerection, blurred vision, Nasal Congestion, Anxiety, Nausea
What diet is needed for energy and tissue repair for a SCI pt?
High Calorie and High Protein diet
