Spinal Cord + Brainstem Flashcards
what is the spinal cord function?
conduit function- ascending (sensory) and descending (motor) pathways; intrinsic function- processing: reflexes and central pattern generators
what spinal cord levels has a greater enlargement in the ventral horn? why does this enlargement exist?
cervical and lumbar spinal levels; its for extra cell bodies for motor neurons innervating skeletal muscle fibres
Which spinal levels has 2 columns (fasciculus gracilis and fasciculus cuneatus)?
anything above T6
what is the brainstems function?
conduit function- ascending (sensory) and descending (motor) pathways; intrinsic function- contains nuclei of cranial nerves III to XII, reticular formation
What are the 3 longitudinal layers in the brainstem?
base, tegmentum, tectum
What are the anterior features of the midbrain?
cerebral peduncles, mamillary bodies, interpendunclar fossa
What are the anterior features of the medulla?
pyramid, olives, median fissure
What are the posterior features of the midbrain?
superior and inferior colliculus
What are the posterior features of the pons?
superior, middle and inferior peduncles
What are the posterior features of the medulla?
obex, FC, FG
