spinal cord and spinal nerves Flashcards
anatomy of spinal cord
The spinal cord is a cylindrical structure of nervous tissue composed of white and gray matter, is uniformly organized and is divided into four regions: cervical (C), thoracic (T), lumbar (L) and sacral (Ss) each of which is comprised of several segments.
length of spinal cord
extends from medulla oblongata to second lumbar vertebrae
protective structures of the Spinal cord
vertebral column
meninges
meninges
enclose spinal cord and brain
so not cover spinal nerves
where are the two enlarged areas of the spinal cord
cervical and lumbar enlargement
internal anatomy of the spinal cord
white and grey matter
central canal with CSF
grey mater
dendrites
cell bodies
un myelinated axons
white matter
outer layer of spinal cords
myelinated axons
name and describe the two divisions of the grey matter
posterior (dorsal) grey horn
anterior (ventral)grey horn
lateral horns
posterior (dorsal) grey horn
contains cell bodies and axons of interneurons
axons of sensory neurons
anterior (ventral) grey horn
contains cells bodies of motor neurons
nerve
laterals grey horn
only in enlargements
cell bodies of autonomic neurons
regions of white matter
anterior, posterior 2 x lateral column
each column contains
a bundle of axons with a common origin or destination and carry similar information
tracts
a bundle of axons in CNS
