Spinal Cord and Nerves Flashcards
31 Spinal Nerves
Exit BELOW vertebrae with the same number (named for disc above it)
Above C7, exit ABOVE disc with same number (named for disc below it)
8 Cervical
12 Thoracic
5 Lumbar
5 Sacral
1 Coccygeal
Cervical enlargement
For nerves C5-T1. Upper extremity nerves
Lumbosacral enlargement
For nerves L1-S3
Lower extremity innervation
Efferent
Motor innervation to trunk, neck, and limbs (Somatic) and smmoth & cardiac muscle (Visceral)
Dorsal Rami
Do NOT form plexus
Sensation from dorsum of scalp, neck, and back
Motor innervation to muscles of neck and deep back (Erector spinae)
Autonomic innervation to visceral structures of neck and back
Small, Short
Ventral Rami
Fuse together to form 4 plexuses
Give rise to all the major nerves
Cervical Plexus (Ventral Rami)
C1-C4; Supply somatic and autonomic innervation to anterior and lateral neck
Brachial Plexus
C5-T1; Autonomic and somatic innervation to upper limb
Intercostal Nerves & Subcostal Nerve
T2-T11 and T12 (Subcostal)
Do NOT form plexus
Segmentally innervate anterolateral thoracic and upper abdominal walls
Lumbar Plexus
Sacral Plexus
Lumbar: L1-L4
Sacral: L4-S4
Innervation to lower ab wall, pelvis, and lower limb
Dorsal Roots
Afferent Sensory Info
Join together in ganglion
Ventral Roots
Strictly efferent (Motor) signals
Intervertebral discs named after
vertebrae above it (1st one is C2)
Nerve that exits ___ the disc is effected by evulsion
Below
Disc +1 = damaged nerve
